The Milam Building

The Milam Building

Description

Completed in 1928, the year before the Great Depression swept through America, the Milam Building is an impressive example of the grandeur of the roaring twenties. Rising 21 stories into the air, it was the tallest brick and concrete reinforced structure in the United States. It was also the first high-rise air-conditioned office building in the country, boasting a Carrier “Manufactured Weather” system that was a marvel of mechanical engineering. Designed by architect George Willis, who apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright before moving to San Antonio, the Milam is a classic early Twentieth-Century skyscraper in the Spanish Revival style, but with a Chicago School twist. The Milam Building is currently under renovation.
